The Issue

District 8B voters deserve the opportunity to hear directly from the candidates asking to represent them on the Chicago Board of Education.

This petition calls for Juan Ignacio Gonzalez and Alexander Angeles to participate in a public debate before Election Day so voters can compare their priorities, experience, and vision for Chicago Public Schools in a fair and open setting.

Alexander Angeles is an 18-year-old recent CPS graduate, former Local School Council Student Representative, and current UIC student running as a write-in candidate for School Board District 8B. His campaign is focused on fully funded public schools, smaller class sizes, stronger student voice, better school meals and facilities, and greater support for educators and school communities.

With only one name printed on the ballot, it may be easy for some to assume this race is already decided. It is not. District 8B has a write-in candidate, and voters still have a choice.

Gonzalez believes he has this election in the bag, but no candidate should be treated as though the office has simply been handed to them without a real public discussion. The people of District 8B deserve a true election - one where candidates answer questions, defend their ideas, and earn the support of the community.

A public debate would allow both candidates to speak directly to voters and give residents more information before making their decision.

If you believe District 8B deserves a competitive, transparent election, you can add your name to this petition requesting a public debate.

Signing does not require you to endorse either candidate. It simply supports giving voters a fuller and more open democratic process.
