Thank you for your support. Thank you for the growing list of more than 6900 voices of healthcare professionals demanding the medical community to uphold its core values.
JAMA was informed of this petition. Their reply was: "The JAMA editors acknowledge receipt of your email and appreciate your input." End of reply. We will soon update JAMA on the growing support, asking to retract the article they published with the following:
"Dear JAMA editors,
Thank you for acknowledging the receipt of our email. We want to update you that 6983 healthcare professionals signed the petition asking you to retract the “viewpoint” you published.
We would also like to update you on further catastrophic events since 10 Nov 2023. Five hospitals were directly attacked. Al-Shifa, Al-Rantisi, and Al-Quds Hospitals are besieged by Israeli tanks and militants. People sheltering in Al-Shifa Hospital and attempting to flee were shot. Al-Shifa Hospital, the largest in Gaza, is out of service now due to Israeli aggression, loss of oxygen, and lack of fuel. Evidence of these reports can be found in recent WHO statements, Doctors Without Borders updates, reports of local news agencies with reporters on the ground, and reports of countless independent journalists in Gaza. We urge you to read and watch. More importantly, attacking healthcare facilities with unprecedented impunity had been legitimized by baseless propaganda that these facilities are “appropriate” military targets. The same claims found their way to JAMA pages. While some argue for medical neutrality when the sanctity of hospitals has been violated, and medical professionals are threatened, giving an avenue to dangerous claims is a moral failure of the medical profession.
Your three-word response is not adequate. The 6983 signatories initiated a dialogue with JAMA and its editors. Your colleagues deserve more respect. If JAMA stands by its decision to publish this “viewpoint,” then we ask you to explain the rationale behind the editorial decision so that the thought process is heard loud and clear. Failure to respond will also be loud and clear by the six thousand signatories and the broader medical community they represent. "
