The Issue

Malaysia's endangered species, such as elephants, represent our national heritage, and they should never be viewed as mere tradeable assets. This issue deeply resonates with me, as I believe in the values of compassion and accountability when it comes to managing and preserving wildlife. Whether it's sterilising stray cats in our neighborhoods or ensuring that the majestic elephants in our forests are treated with respect and care, our wildlife requires our voice and action.

Recently, the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (PERHILITAN) facilitated the 'loan' of 19 elephants to various destinations, purportedly for research and conservation purposes. However, the lack of transparency and detailed information surrounding these transfers raises significant concerns about the elephants' welfare and the true intent behind these movements.

Elephants are highly intelligent, social animals with complex emotional and physical needs. Any relocation without proper planning and consideration of these needs can result in stress, injury, or even death. It’s crucial to have full disclosure of the details regarding these transfers, including the elephants' current living conditions, health reports, and the nature of the agreements made.

According to global wildlife standards, ethical wildlife management should emphasize transparency and prioritize animal welfare. This petition calls on PERHILITAN to release comprehensive reports on the welfare of these 19 elephants and the specifics of their 'loans.' Additionally, it is imperative that independent wildlife welfare groups are allowed to review these reports to ensure accuracy and accountability.

Our shared goal is to guarantee that these elephants are not unjustly exploited and that their relocation truly benefits their conservation. By demanding transparency, we can help protect our precious wildlife and uphold the values that define our nation's commitment to conservation.

I urge you to join me in this important cause. Demand that PERHILITAN provides full transparency on the 19 elephant loans. Sign this petition to insist on accountability and ethical treatment for Malaysia’s elephants. Together, we can ensure that our wildlife is treated with the dignity and respect it deserves.
