Demand answers for the Mayfield housing and dam budget crisis
The Issue
MAYFIELD RESIDENTS DEMAND ANSWERS
For years, residents of Mayfield have been waiting for proper housing and basic infrastructure.
The Mayfield Ext 45 and Ext 46 projects date back to 2017 when 49.5 million was allocated for housing related infrastructure. According to the information available only R20.5 million was spent on these stand-alone toilets . In desperation for housing residents who waited patiently for a promise that was not delivered occupied these stand-alone toilets with informal housing.
Residents in Mayfield Ext 45 and 46 begun facing an ongoing problems with the dam and stormwater infrastructure, which puts those living in the area at risk, particularly during heavy rains.
To address this issue in 2026, the municipality's draft capital budget includes R10 million for Mayfield Ext 45 and R19.5 million for Mayfield Ext 46 , a combined R29.5 million to fix the dam and provide proper housing next to these stand alone toilets which is still an ongoing project promising better housing and infrastructure in these areas and yet shacks are being built next to the incomplete toilets while proper housing remains undelivered . The community needs clarity on exactly what these funds are intended for and how they will be spent.
We are demanding answers:
•Where did the money allocated to Mayfield since 2017 go?
•How was the R20.5 million reportedly spent on stand-alone toilets accounted for?
•Why has the promised housing infrastructurenot been completed?
•What exactly will the R29.5 million allocated in 2026 be used for?
•How much has already been spent, and on what?
•When will residents finally receive the proper housing they were promised?
Mayfield residents deserve transparency, accountability and answers about every rand allocated to their community. We cannot continue to receive promises while families remain in shacks beside incomplete projects.
