The Issue

Kavantissa, Sri Lanka's tallest wild tusker, was a magnificent presence in our forests. For years, I have been closely following his life, watching him roam the wild with grace and majesty. But on 16th October 2026, Kavantissa's life was tragically cut short. He was shot and suffered for weeks before he eventually succumbed, despite receiving treatment. His death is a profound loss and a disturbing reminder of the threats faced by these gentle giants.

To honour Kavantissa and to ensure justice is served, we must demand an independent post-mortem to uncover the real cause of his death. Without this scrutiny, the truth may be buried, as has happened with too many tuskers before him. We owe it to Kavantissa and to all wild elephants who called him their giant protector.

Elephants are part of our national heritage, a living symbol of Sri Lanka's natural beauty. Losing them would deprive future generations of the wonder and awe that only these magnificent creatures can inspire. Our children deserve more than just photos as relics of a bygone era.

We suspect there’s more to Kavantissa's untimely death than meets the eye. Officially sanctioned investigations have not always been transparent and could potentially obscure the truth. By engaging independent experts, we can ensure that an impartial examination is conducted, revealing any foul play or negligence involved.

This is not just about seeking justice; it’s about creating a safer environment for all wild tuskers. Transparent investigations and their findings can influence policy changes that protect these endangered creatures, ensuring that no other elephant suffers the same fate as Kavantissa.

We urge the Department of Wildlife Conservation, international elephant conservation organizations, and the government of Sri Lanka to take immediate action. They must engage independent wildlife forensic experts to conduct an unbiased post-mortem and publish the full report. Only then can we initiate measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.

Please, stand with us in demanding transparency and justice for Kavantissa and for the preservation of Sri Lanka's majestic wild tuskers. Sign this petition and show that we will not let their plight fade into silence.
