The 2019 legislative session in Albany has come to an end.
The housing committees accomplished a lot this year - some bills were years in the making. Unfortunately, S3820/A5026 did not make it out of committee this session and was not voted on. We will keep fighting.
Save Central Park NYC, United Firefighters Association, Landmark West, Human-Scale NYC, FRIENDS of the Upper East Side Historic Districts, City Council Members Ben Kallos and Keith Powers, and others continue to support this legislation. There will be a lot of work to do over the summer including broadening the coalition that supports A5026/S3820.
New York City is currently facing a deficit of 500,000+ apartments needed by low-income households. Hundreds of feet of empty space in luxury buildings is not helping. If this wasn't cause enough for urgency, do we need to wait for a disaster for action?
Assembly Member Linda Rosenthal's and Senator Robert Jackson's bills in Albany would tackle the no-count loopholes much more comprehensively than anything City Planning has done. Buildings already built or under construction with 25% to 30% – some in excess of 300’ feet- of empty space do nothing to address a housing crises!
