The Issue

In our communities today, a woman's reality often feels perilous. Whether it's walking home from work, being on a night out with friends, or even being in the comfort of one's own home, the fear of gender-based violence (GBV) and femicide looms large. This fear, fueled by a societal power imbalance where men often hold too much sway, leaves many women reluctant to speak up, to go out, or to live their lives freely and fully. The time for silence and inaction is over. It's time for us to demand change.

The disheartening statistics tell us that one in three women globally experience GBV in their lifetime, with many cases not reported due to fear of retribution or a lack of faith in the system. In South Africa alone, the femicide rate is five times the global average, a horrifying indication of the crisis we face.

Women deserve to walk their streets without glancing over their shoulders, to express themselves without intimidation, and to feel safe in their own homes. This is not just a women’s issue; it affects everyone, tearing communities apart and perpetuating cycles of violence and trauma.

We need tangible, bold actions now. Firstly, we call upon government leaders to ensure enforcement of stricter penalties for perpetrators of GBV and hold them accountable. Legislation must be fortified to protect victims adequately and to deter aggressors.

Secondly, we urge educational institutions to integrate comprehensive gender sensitivity and anti-violence curricula at all levels of learning. Education is pivotal in changing societal norms and dismantling the outdated power structures that undermine gender equality.

Thirdly, increased funding for support services is crucial. Women's shelters, helplines, and counseling services should receive prioritized financial support to adequately care for and support GBV victims.

Join us in demanding these changes from our policymakers, because change is possible and we all have a role to play in shaping a safer, fairer world. Sign this petition and stand with us in advocating for a society where all women can live without fear and with dignity.
