The Issue

As a girl living in South Africa, I should feel safe walking down the street, going to school, or even just meeting friends in a public park. Yet, I find myself constantly looking over my shoulder, questioning the intentions of men who pass me by. Instead of enjoying my youth, I live in fear due to the escalating cases of harassment and violence against women.

Violence against women has reached alarming levels in our country. Just last year, over 40,000 rapes were reported, a figure that is only the tip of the iceberg due to the many cases that go unreported. The lack of sufficient police action and accountability magnifies the issue, leaving women vulnerable and perpetrators emboldened.

We call upon the South African Police Service (SAPS) to urgently prioritize the safety of women by increasing their efforts in preventing and effectively responding to cases of violence and harassment. Improved training focusing on sensitivity and victim support must be implemented, and more resources should be allocated to ensure quicker response times.

Moreover, we need President Cyril Ramaphosa to stand up and address this issue with the seriousness and urgency it deserves. As the leader of our nation, a public acknowledgment paired with a clear plan to combat gender-based violence would send a strong message that such actions will not be condoned.

Together, we can make our streets, universities, and public spaces safe for everyone. Let us demand what is our right — the right to live free of fear and intimidation. Sign this petition if you believe in a South Africa where everyone can feel secure, regardless of their gender.
