The Issue

Growing up as an older brother of 11 siblings, I've always felt responsible for protecting my sisters and ensuring their safety. Raised in Limpopo, I've witnessed the terrifying statistics of gender-based violence unfold in real-time. Women in South Africa are being murdered at alarming rates, with a woman losing her life to femicide every few hours. The thought of this sends chills down my spine, as it could be one of my sisters, my friends, or my cousins who become yet another statistic.

In South Africa, children experience violence daily, a horrific reality that has unfortunately become normalized. Survivors are often met with indifference, turned away from police stations, and see their cases vanish into thin air while perpetrators roam free, reinforcing a cycle of fear and injustice. Our government delivers speeches filled with promises of action, yet they have been overwhelmingly ineffective. It is the youth, those of us aged 13 to 29, who are standing up to say: "Enough is enough!"

This issue hits close to home, not just for me, but for countless others in our communities. Every day, we hear the stories of lives lost and dreams shattered. Each story is a reminder that the status quo is not merely unacceptable; it's life-threatening. The silence around this issue is a death sentence for too many. Men, too, are affected, as brothers, fathers, and uncles grieve for the women they can't protect.

We demand immediate and concrete steps to be taken by the South African government. First, we need to implement stricter and more effective policies that hold perpetrators accountable and provide real justice for survivors. Our legal system must be revamped to ensure that cases are not lost and survivors receive the support they deserve. Additionally, we need awareness campaigns aimed at educating communities about the prevalence and severity of gender-based violence.

Furthermore, we need an increase in funding for shelters and services that support survivors of GBV, giving them safe spaces to rebuild their lives. The establishment of trained, empathetic personnel in police stations to handle these cases sensitively is crucial in fostering trust in the system.

Join me and the countless others demanding safety, justice, and change for the women and children of South Africa. Let's ensure a future where fear of violence and death does not govern the lives of our loved ones. Sign this petition to insist on urgent action and show the South African government that the youth are united and relentless in our pursuit for justice and reform.
