Dalton was detained by law enforcement following a physical altercation and shooting outside the Montgomery County Courthouse in Clarksville, Tennessee. The incident occurred in Millennium Plaza around 1:15 p.m., leaving both Eatherly and an unidentified man injured. Eatherly was at the Montgomery County Courts Center for a scheduled morning docket appearance regarding a civil debt case. According to witness statements and District Attorney General Robert Nash, Eatherly approached a group of people and directed a racial comment toward a Black man, asking if he was going to "chimp out". The man retaliated by striking Eatherly. Eatherly pulled a firearm and fired multiple shots (reported as three to four rounds), hitting the man in the stomach. During the chaotic exchange, Eatherly also accidentally shot himself in the arm. The immediate aftermath of the shooting was captured on a running livestream on Eatherly’s account. In the audio, he can be heard detailing his version of events to a responding police officer, claiming he acted in self-defense after being assaulted even thought we are aware of his recent rhetoric that his intentions where to harm and his victim didn’t possess a deadly weapon. Courthouse security and local deputies locked down the area immediately following the gunshots. The victim shot in the stomach was airlifted via LifeFlight to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville. Eatherly was taken by ambulance to Vanderbilt Clarksville Hospital to treat his arm wound and minor head scrapes. Both individuals are listed in stable condition. Eatherly was taken into police custody at the scene. District Attorney Robert Nash confirmed that law enforcement is actively reviewing the facts of the investigation, and formal criminal charges are expected against Eatherly. This incident occurred just days after Eatherly was arrested on May 9 in Nashville. In that separate case, he was charged with theft of services, disorderly conduct, and resisting arrest after allegedly causing a scene, shouting racial slurs, and refusing to pay a $371 steakhouse bill because staff asked him to stop livestreaming. He had just been released on a $5,000 bond for those charges before today’s shooting. Let’s make sure that Dalton Eatherly suffers the consequences of his actions that should have been legally halted a long time ago by our police forces.
