There are no words to describe the suffering of horses air-shipped to Japan for slaughter, and now gruesome details of that suffering have been brought to light by animal welfare investigators working both in Canada and Japan. Once again, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency has been negligent at best. Or perhaps the agency has been knowingly complicit and has chosen instead to turn a blind eye to serious animal welfare concerns, lying to cover their backsides and hoping to keep an indefensible industry viable. Whatever the reason behind this fiasco, it is unacceptable. From unreported serious illnesses and injuries to collapsing horses and numerous deaths, the facts reveal a shocking truth: Canada's live export industry is an animal welfare disaster.
