The Issue

Carroll County, Virginia, has always been a place of serene beauty, rich cultural heritage, and a tight-knit community. As a resident, I have seen firsthand how this area, with its picturesque landscapes and quiet towns, is an oasis of calm amid the hustle and bustle of modern life- which is why my family moved here. However, the proposal to allow closed door deals of data centers threatens to transform this peaceful environment into a natural resource depleted environment.

Data centers, while crucial for our digital lives, come with significant downsides, particularly when placed in rural settings like Carroll County. These facilities require vast amounts of water and electricity, which could strain our local resources and infrastructure. Moreover, the noise generated by the cooling systems, along with increased traffic during their construction and operation, can significantly disrupt the tranquility of our community.

The environmental impact cannot be ignored either. Data centers release excess heat into the atmosphere, contributing to local warming. Furthermore, a threat to wildlife habitats, and increased carbon footprint—factors we can ill afford in our fight against climate change.

What we need is a sensible development strategy that balances technological advancement with the preservation of our community's soul. By implementing a moratorium on the construction of new data centers and bringing data centers into our community, local elected officials can give us the necessary time to thoroughly assess the long-term impacts of these developments. This pause can lead to strategic planning, ensuring that any future development is sustainable and in harmony with our county’s needs and values.

I implore the Carroll County Board of Supervisors to enact this moratorium. Let us engage the community, explore sustainable alternatives, and work together to protect our precious resources and quality of life. By signing this petition, you are joining a collective voice that cherishes the natural beauty and heritage of Carroll County while advocating for thoughtful development. Your support today can help preserve our home for future generations.

Sign this petition to urge local officials to responsibly manage the growth of data centers and protect the integrity of Carroll County, Virginia.
