Here is a firm, persuasive letter addressed to Democratic Congressional Leaders Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries, urging them to shift from defensive, incremental healthcare positions to actively advancing single-payer Medicare for All legislation.

The Honorable Hakeem Jeffries House Democratic Leader United States House of Representatives Washington, DC 20515

Subject: Immediate Leadership Shift Required:

Bring Medicare for All to the Floor for Consideration

Dear Leader Schumer and Leader Jeffries,

We write to you today as constituents, grassroots organizers, and advocates for American families who are drowning under the crushing financial weight of the US health care crisis. We are asking—and insisting—that as the leaders of the Democratic Party in Congress, you fundamental alter your stance on single-payer Medicare for All legislation and allow comprehensive health reform to receive full consideration, committee hearings, and floor votes.

For years, party leadership has leaned into incrementalism, public options, and ACA subsidy extensions as the path of least resistance. While defending baseline protections remains critical, it has become painfully clear that tweaking the margins of a multi-billion-dollar for-profit insurance industry fails to address the root systemic failures hurting working Americans. Over 27 million Americans remain uninsured, tens of millions more are dangerously underinsured with deductibles they cannot afford to pay, and medical debt remains the single leading cause of personal bankruptcy in the United States.

A health care system that ties human survival to employment status and private insurer profit margins is fundamentally broken.

The arguments against taking up single-payer reform no longer match the economic, political, or moral realities facing our nation:

  1. The Electoral Mandate & Public Support: Overwhelming majorities of Democratic voters and a consistent majority of the general public support a government-guaranteed system that covers all medically necessary care without co-pays or deductibles. Opposing or blocking single-payer legislation stifles the exact structural reform voters demand when they elect a Democratic majority.
  2. Economic & Fiscal Responsibility: Research—including independent analyses by the Congressional Budget Office and The Lancet—consistently demonstrates that replacing administrative overhead, executive windfalls, and insurer profiteering with a streamlined single-payer system would save hundreds of billions of dollars annually in net national health spending while eliminating out-of-pocket costs for families and small businesses.
  3. Moral Leadership: As legislative leaders, your function is not merely to gauge where the political center currently sits, but to shape it. Restricting floor debate on legislation championing health care as a human right signals to the electorate that corporate insurance donors hold a veto over progressive reform.

We urge leadership to take immediate action on the following steps:

  • Allow Public Hearings: Ensure that the Medicare for All Act (championed by Rep. Pramila Jayapal and Sen. Bernie Sanders) receives dedicated, transparent committee hearings in both the House and Senate.
  • Remove Institutional Barriers: Stop signaling to caucus members that co-sponsoring or advocating for single-payer reform hinders their committee assignments or standing within the party.
  • Commit to Floor Votes: Allow open debate and floor votes so the public can clearly see which lawmakers stand with working families and which stand with private insurance monopolies.

Defending the status quo is no longer a viable strategy for working people. Incremental patches will never fix a system whose baseline incentive is to deny care for profit. We insist that you demonstrate true moral and legislative leadership by stepping aside as obstacles to single-payer health care and opening the path for Medicare for All to become law.

We look forward to your response detailing how congressional leadership plans to address single-payer proposals in the upcoming legislative session.

Sincerely,
