Remove free balloons from supermarkets and reduce plastic

The Issue

This petition is to campaign to remove the offer of free balloons in supermarkets. Balloons are not required to enable shopping. They are offered as entertainment to children.  In reality, the balloons are often discarded very quickly after leaving the store. It delivers the wrong message to children about the cost and environmental impact of disposable plastic. Balloons are not needed and, in an effort to reduce our plastic footprint, we ask that Delhaize stop offering free balloons in its stores.

Delhaize is an environmentally conscious supermarket who offers paper and cotton bags for groceries over plastic ones. In addition, Delhaize was identified in 2016 as a supermarket "leading the way" to reduce the use of palm oil.  For example, it bans palm oil in all its own brands, see link below.

Removing balloons from Delhaize supermarkets would complement its already positive role in building sustainable shopping aisles for the future.

Further information
"Balloons negatively impact our environment by littering streams, lakes, and beaches. It’s basically the same as intentionally throwing trash on the ground or into the ocean. Even balloons marketed as biodegradable or “eco-friendly” can still take years to disintegrate, meaning they’re not any better for the environment than standard balloons."
