KEEP SAGAMORE IN THE LAKESIDE CLUSTER!!

Dear DeKalb County Schools Superintendent Dr. R. Stephen Green and Board of Education Members:

As you know, in order to accommodate current and projected overcrowding in certain secondary schools, the DeKalb County School District (“DCSD”) issued a recommendation on September 27, 2016, that, among other things, a new “Cross Keys”, 2500-seat high school (“CKHS”) be built at the former Briarcliff High School location and that 750 seats be added to Lakeside High School (“LHS”), which would give LHS a capacity of 2506 at completion. However, LHS’ projected student population in the year 2022 is 2619.

Along with the new CKHS and the addition to LHS, DCSD recommended that 250 students be transferred from LHS to CKHS. Given the history of redistricting and split feeder systems that have affected Sagamore Hills families since the schools doors opened in 1961, Sagamore parents have strong concerns that those 250 students from LHS to CKHS will come from Sagamore Hills Elementary School (“SHES”).

SHES families and students have been an integral part of the Lakeside Cluster Community for many years. Unlike students in Chamblee, Brookhaven, Tucker and Dunwoody, our SHES community, and the Lakeside Cluster Community, do not identify with a city. Instead, however, we identify with LHS. LHS is our neighborhood, our community, our neighbors, our students, even for households that do not have students attending LHS. We play sports within this community, we are on swim teams within this community, we go to church within this community, we are members of neighborhood civic associations in this community.

It is unanimous among the Lakeside Cluster Community that it wants its member schools to stay together. It does not want students leaving the cluster to go to a new high school at Briarcliff or some other “cost neutral” location.

If a 750-seat addition is not sufficient to keep the Lakeside Cluster Community intact, then the DCSD and the Board of Education should approve an appropriate addition to LHS that will ensure that 250 students from the Lakeside Community Cluster are NOT forced to be redistricted to CKHS.

Within the SHES boundaries, the vast majority of our households are within ½ mile to just over 2 miles from LHS. SHES students can walk to and from LHS along safe, residential streets. LHS provides the closest available seats for our SHES students with the safest routes and least amount of travel time.

WE ASK THAT YOU PLEASE NOT SUPPORT THE DESTRUCTION OF THE LAKESIDE CLUSTER COMMUNITY! INSTEAD, SUPPORT A PLAN THAT INCLUDES A SUFFICIENT ADDITION TO LHS THAT WILL ACCOMMODATE ALL OF THE STUDENTS WITHIN THE LAKESIDE CLUSTER.
