Petition: Investigate DeKalb County Jail now!
On April 10, 2019 photos of incarcerated people protesting their conditions at the DeKalb County Jail went viral online leading to outrage and protests. This controversy comes soon after a lawsuit over horrific conditions for women inmates was filed against another nearby jail in Fulton County.
The crisis of racist mass incarceration has reached unprecedented levels. The United States currently has over 2.3 million people trapped behind bars. 76% of those in jail are being held without conviction simply because they can’t afford bail. Incarceration disproportionately effects poor and working-class people as well as Black, brown, Native, mentally ill and other oppressed groups.
We are extremely concerned for the safety and well being of our brothers and sisters. We demand the DeKalb County Board of Commissioners implement the following:
- IMMEDIATE INVESTIGATION INTO CONDITIONS AT DEKALB COUNTY JAIL
- RIGHT TO HUMANE TREATMENT FOR ALL PRISONERS, INCLUDING:
- - Suitable living conditions free of mold and other toxins
- - Full healthcare including medicine and mental health services
- - Healthy, balanced diet and respect for dietary needs
- - Access to quality educational resources and employment programs
- END ALL DEHUMANIZING, RACIST AND CLASSIST PRACTICES, INDUCING:
- - End to strip search and systematic sexual assault
- - End to the system of money bail
