More and more people are looking for "root causes". How much better this is than focusing on symptoms and effects! This signifies that Americans are maturing beyond self-aggrandizement and isolation to the kind of sense of maturity associated with adulthood: We are preparing to face ourselves (including our limitations, our disappointments, our most grievous mistakes) rather than blame others, blame our genes, blame our history. For adulthood arrives only though a sense of loss and limitation, a sense of how much grander is the world than our small selves. (For what we do not know is Infinite.)
Nothing less than our promoting a radical shift in values (away from gross materialism) and our fostering greater states of consciousness will permit humanity to adapt to both a swiftly changing and endangered world. The pairing of both these rightful actions and the present dangers besetting our planet promotes a spiritual tension that is like no other, a literal hothouse for our emotional and psychological development. To succeed at navigating the Climate Emergency, nations must outgrow competitive practices and learn to cooperate; nothing less will ensure the security and safety of our world.
Yet this very week, Bezos and Musk attended a gala White House dinner with Trump and his business partner, the prince of Saudi Arabia. We must consider Bezos a drug dealer, Musk and Trump warlords.
Soon, Americans across this land will launch a general strike, understanding that non-participation (i.e., Gandhi's satya graha) with corporate greed is necessary in order for us to withdraw from our diverse addictions (to our Empire's violent pursuit of weaker nations' resources) and to purify the karmic shadow of our nation. We demand that our politicians stop conflating democracy with capitalism! (For Americans are merely 4.5% of the world's population and yet we use 25% of the world's resources. Clearly this is unjust.)
Let us voluntarily curtail our wants and delimit our lifestyle, merely so the rest of the world can live! Everything has been gifted to us on our beautiful but fragile planet: Now it is time to give back!
