This petition started because – as someone who works from home – the soundtrack of my everyday is radio. As an artist (whose studio practice is environmentally concerned) I’ve grown despondent hearing so little about climate change on radio news broadcasts. True, there’s plenty of information online that one doesn’t have to look far to find, but updates are scarce throughout the day on air, and for many, radio is a principal source of news.
The BBC is a fitting example here. Its website contains a wealth of environmental information: from articles on low carbon dietary advice to it’s Costing the Earth podcast. But only a tiny fraction of this coverage finds its way into news headlines, or the wider radio schedule.
A re-ordering of priorities needs to take place in the mainstream media. We must all do our part, no matter the scale. And time is of the essence: recent statements that we have 12 years to safe-guard the future of the planet have been revised... make that 18 months
