After more than three years, we are finally seeing signs that political pressure may be building. On July 15, Ontario’s Minister of Emergency Preparedness and Response, Jill Dunlop, called on the federal government for additional support as wildfires continue to impact communities across our province.
When I started this petition, I hoped awareness would grow before the crisis reached this point. I have often said that the unfortunate silver lining of wildfire smoke drifting into the GTA and other major cities is that more people would finally see what northern communities have been living with for years. Visibility brings awareness and awareness can lead to action.
I can’t help but feel frustrated that it has taken this long for meaningful public attention and stronger calls for action. So much has already been lost: forests, wildlife, homes, livelihoods and billions of dollars. I believe much more could have been done to reduce the scale of these recurring disasters.
