Planet lovers, we are doing well. The petition is growing and approaching a number which will ensure our government must pay attention.
However, the looming threat of Adani became more pressing yesterday. The Queensland Premier, Annastasia Palaszczuk announced she is ‘fed up’ with the state’s process for the Adani coal mine, and called an emergency meeting to be held tomorrow where deadlines will be set for outstanding approvals. We must express our concern about this mine, a mine if which opened will produce coal that will consume 0.5% of the entire global carbon budget.
Can you call the Premier’s office on 07 37297000 to express your concerns? Or write to her at thepremier@premiers.qld.gov.au
It is always more effective to write a personalised letter, but you can use a template like this:
’Dear Premier,
I write to express my grave concern about the Adani coal mine. It has been demonstrated that this single coal mine will produce coal that will consume 0.5% of the global carbon budget, that being the amount of carbon that can be emitted to limit warming to 2 degrees. As you will be aware, warming over 2 degrees will lead to global catastrophe - billions of climate refugees, water and food insecurity, extreme weather events and significant human suffering. And the Great Barrier Reef will be no more, bleached and dead - what will this mean for the Queensland tourism industry?
The Adani coal mine is also anticipated to result in over a million cubic metres of sea floor dredging, threatening the habitat of dugongs and turtles. The massively increased sea traffic greatly increases the chance of accidents and immeasurable damage to the Great Barrier Reef.
There are major concerns about groundwater contamination, wetland degradation and loss of critical habitats
Please do not approve this disastrous and damaging proposal.
Yours Sincerely,
