Dear Friends, As you are all aware, sentencing took place today. A maximum of 5 years prison sentence was handed down for the conviction on culpable homicide. In terms of legislation applicable to the section under which the sentencing was handed down, there will be an opportunity to apply for correctional supervision after serving a sixth of the sentence, namely after having served a maximum of ten months imprisonment. That is the effect and implications of the 5 year sentence that was handed down today in the North Gauteng High Court. The NPA has 14 days to file an Appeal against the ruling handed down by Judge Masipa in September 2014. They can only appeal on the basis of an error in law, which is exactly what we are asking them to do as there is sufficient grounds for the State to do so. Against this background, we have extended our Campaign until 31 October 2014 and kindly ask you to continue to circulate the e-mail link to people within your networks. We still need 30 signatures. Many thanks for participating in this Campaign that gives us opportunity to voice our concerns and facilitate policy changes. Kind Regards, CEO: South African Institute for Violence Prevention (SAIVP) Chairperson: South African Institute for Violence Prevention (SAIVP)
