You signed. You spoke up. You voted. And you were in good company! DC voters have overwhelmingly voted to ban foie gras! On November 3, Initiative 86 passed with approximately 73% support—a powerful victory for animals and everyone working to end their exploitation.

The measure prohibits force-feeding birds to enlarge their livers and bans the commercial sale, distribution, and importation of fattened bird liver products, including foie gras. It challenges an industry that treats ducks and geese as products instead of living beings.

Thank you to everyone who signed FARM’s petition, shared the campaign, and spoke up for birds. We celebrate alongside Pro-Animal Future DC, which led the ballot initiative campaign, and the volunteers, advocates, and voters who made this win possible.

Next, we need to make sure this victory becomes enforceable protection. The ban is scheduled to go into effect July 1, 2027, but implementation requires DC Council funding and congressional review, and legal challenges could cause delays. DC supporters: urge your councilmembers to fund and implement Initiative 86 and uphold the voters’ decision.

This victory is one step toward FARM’s goal: ending the use of animals for food. Ducks and geese deserve freedom from exploitation. So do chickens, cows, pigs, fish, and every other animal raised and killed for a meal.

Keep taking action. Choose vegan meals, help others do the same, and organize in your community. Join FARM’s Compassionate Activist Network to turn your commitment into action, wherever you live.

Celebrate this win. Share it. Then help build the next one.
