Petition update

Meeting with Coach Maxwell

Rachael Goodman
Dawsonville, GA, United States

Jul 11, 2019 —

My husband and I met with Dawson County High School’s Head Coach Sid Maxwell this morning. Coach Maxwell had been made aware of the petition, but did not show interest in seeing the over 600 signatures that I brought with me. Although he did say he sympathized with our cause, he was not willing to do anything other than “revisit “ it next year, as he says orders have already been placed for this upcoming season. He would not commit to not using Nike in the future, but said he would research other vendors. He said he would not bench players who chose to cover the Nike emblem on their gear, but would not encourage them to do so, or allow them to wear items from another vendor.  I appreciate his taking the time to meet with us, and him saying he would check into it.

Each day on the news, we see these pro athletes pushing the envelope further with their anti -American behaviors and disrespect for our flag. As long as we continue to support them, and the companies that sponsor them, I believe their hate for our Country will only continue to grow and spread. By allowing our youth to idolize and advertise for them, we are teaching them that this behavior is acceptable and a way to gain attention.

Coach Maxwell said he does not want “politics” pushed on our kids. I believe that this has nothing to do with politics, but patriotism. Patriotism, love for our country, respect for our flag and appreciation for our Veterans and public service officers should transcend political lines. It is not about a political party or agenda.

We are a small town with a fairly small school district, but I believe we can make a difference by standing up to corporations like Nike. I believe it is time to put our foot down and refuse to put any more money in their pockets. Our few hundred thousand may be a drop in the bucket to their billions, but if enough people who care take a stand, I believe this will spread to a state and even national movement.

My next step is to request meetings with each of the different athletic divisions and request that they do not place any more orders to Nike. From what I am told, all of the different sports teams do order from them, so that is a lot of revenue. Also, I will be asking for an audience with the School Board to present them the petition signatures , which continues to grow on the hour.

Thank you to everyone who has signed and shared, it renews my faith to see so many feel the same disgust to see our Nation’s symbol of freedom disrespected.

I am asking that anyone who has connection with groups or organizations who would like to get behind this cause to please contact me.

Thank you again and I will continue to update!
