If this statement made you sit up and take notice then we need your help!!

Our youth need our help and they need it NOW!  Too many are completing suicide because they feel there is no other way to end the pain.  In fact, suicide is the second leading cause of death among ages 10 - 34 years old.  That means that our youth are at risk as early as 10 years old.  Not only do parents need to be take notice but so do the educators that our children spend a majority of their time during the school day.

This is why Virginia Senator Jeremy McPike (D) is introducing some very promising legislation (SB 1117). It will be referred to the Virginia Senate Committee on Education and Health. This Bill would require “every person seeking initial licensure or renewal of a license with an endorsement as a school counselor to complete training in the recognition of mental health disorder and behavioral distress, including depression, trauma, violence, youth suicide, and substance abuse.”

My 17 year old son died by suicide on October 23, 2015.  The day he died, he left school early because he was having one of his "bad" days and his school psychologist was not available to speak with him.  I strongly believe that had someone, other than the one school psychologist, who is properly trained in suicide prevention was available to talk to my son, the outcome would have been different.

The David J. Cobb Foundation is pleased to see this legislation advancing.  It truly takes a village to care for our children and we look forward to expanding this opportunity to all School employees (counselors, educators, staff) in the middle and high schools who interact daily with students.  We believe that anyone in contact with students must be required to be trained on how to recognize and handle an at risk student with the care they need.

This is a great step toward providing our children the resources they need and deserve.

PLEASE sign our petition so we can show the committee how important an issue this is to us.  Our goal is to reduce the number of young people dying by suicide and to increase awareness of mental illness in Prince William County, Virginia, the US and the world.
