Petition update

Who's listening?!

Aug 1, 2014 — Hello wonderful supporters!

We wanted to update you on some hugely exciting news and let you know how together we can continue to make a difference to protect children.

Child Eyes is going from strength to strength and our voices are being heard in the highest places!

We now need to make sure they are heard everywhere.

CHILD EYES AT THE HOME OFFICE: THEY'RE LISTENING -

Earlier this month Child Eyes met with the Minister for Crime Prevention, Norman Baker MP, at The Home Office. We have also secured a further meeting with the new Secretary of State for Education, Nicky Morgan MP.

We were delighted to find that Minister Baker agrees with us entirely and believes there is a real problem with the proliferation of sexualized and sexist imagery being displayed around children. Like us Norman Baker is extremely concerned about the findings of government research showing the link between the normalisation of soft porn and attitudes that underpin violence against women and girls. The Home Office is treating this as an urgent public health issue and is keen to effect legal change to protect children from sexualisation as soon as possible.

Minister Baker commented: "I am very sympathetic to the Child Eyes campaign and agree the Law needs to address this problem."

We will keep you updated on any progress with legislation and on our forthcoming meeting with the Secretary of State for Education.

Our voices are being heard at the highest level and with your help we are making changes!

MORRISONS: WILL THEY LISTEN??!! -

We are now into the second week of our #topshelfpornpapers campaign with our fellow campaigners No More Page 3 to get The Sun, The Star and The Sport placed on top shelves in supermarkets so that children will not be exposed to porn.

There have been signs that the supermarkets are listening with Tesco promising a review of its #pornpaper displays. We are waiting for an announcement from Tesco on the outcome of this review and will let you know as soon as we hear the result. Already supporters are reporting more responsible and #familyfriendly displays in stores they visit, which is fantastic.

We were delighted that Morrisons agreed to move #rapemags (women's weeklies that routinely feature rape and child abuse on their front covers) away from children's comics, sweets and till points but are very disappointed with Morrisons' response to complaints about #pornpapers.

Morrisons told us:

“Following an internal review of our newspaper and magazine display, and in response to customer feedback, we have taken a number of actions. This includes moving women’s real life titles away from children’s magazines and to the top tier of our fixtures, and the removal of Chat magazine from the checkout area. We are not aware of widespread concern over the position of The Sun and The Star, but will continue to listen carefully to our customers on this issue.”

We were a bit baffled about Morrisons' response given that there had been earlier signs that they were considering our complaints about the display of #pornpapers.

Their stance made more sense in light of the fact that the front page of yesterday's Sun 'news'paper featured an ad for Morrisons!

Clearly Morrisons' 'pride' in being a 'family friendly' store is rather misplaced!

We were very disappointed to see Morrisons' advert on the front page of the Sun next to a feature about a woman's breasts and also to hear of Morrisons' supposed lack of awareness about concerns regarding children being exposed to soft porn in their stores.

We *know* there is widespread concern about #pornpapers at child height and we need to make Morrisons recognise that this concern exists.

WE NEED YOUR HELP!!!

What you can do to let Morrisons know that the 'widespread concern' they deny exists:

1. Email them to tell them why you think #pornpapers should be on the top shelf:

customerservice@morrisonsplc.co.uk

Copy us into any complaints and responses received at nomoresupermarketporn@gmail.com

Morrisons have told us they will keep track of complaints received and we will also keep evidence of this in order to prove to them that widespread concern exists.

2. Share your concerns with Morrisons via their Facebook page:

https://www.facebook.com/Morrisons

3. Tweet @morrisons to tell them you want them to put pornpapers on the top shelf. Make sure you include @childeyesuk and @nomorepage3 in your tweets as well as #topshelfpornpapers.

4. Share this campaign with everyone you know and don’t give up!!

Thank you so much for your amazing support! With your help we are holding big retailers to account for sexualising children and putting profit before children's welfare.

Please keep up with our campaign on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/ChildEyes and Twitter @ChildEyesUK: https://twitter.com/ChildEyesUK
