“Rail fare increases of 21 percent over three years, starting with 10 percent in July and another 10 percent hike next year, cuts in train service on weekends and off peak times on the New Canaan branch, and bus fare increases are coming unless the state finds some funding alternatives.”

              James Redeker, CT Transportation Commissioner

              NewCanaanite.com, January 25, 2018

Governor Dannel Malloy and DOT Commissioner James Redeke recently announced that they are looking to significant service cuts and rate hikes on the Metro North branch lines, including New Canaan, as a means to deal with serious budget issues resulting from the depleted state transportation fund. Business owners, political and non-profit leaders and citizens alike agree that these actions would be devastating for our town.

There are alternative funding sources for the DOT fund – higher gas taxes and/or reinstituted highway tolls. Many argue that there are ways to increase ridership, and thereby revenues, on the New Canaan line– earlier inbound service and higher train speeds for improved commutes.

Please join us in communicating with our elected and appointed officials in Hartford.

To CT Governor Dannel Malloy and DOT Commissioner James Redeker:

We, the undersigned, strongly oppose the proposed 1) elimination of weekend train service, 2) cuts in off-peak service during the week and 3) substantial hikes in commuter fares on Metro North’s New Canaan spur line.

We believe that such service cutbacks and fare increases will severely impact the strength of our local economy. Significantly fewer off-peak trains and overall higher prices will 1) diminish the value of local real estate by making New Canaan less attractive for new homeowners/commuters and their families, 2) damage restaurants and retail establishments by hampering essential transportation for their employees and customers and 3) penalize local non-profit sites through lower visitation.

In fact, as CT residents we look for improvements in the service to and from New Canaan - specifically for more timely service and an increased number of morning and evening trains for those commuting on our line.
