Trader Joe's: Make Shopping More Vegetarian & Vegan Friendly
0 have signed. Let’s get to 5,000!
As more Americans embrace plant-based diets and diets with limited animal products, supermarkets around the country have embraced this movement providing increasing options for non-meat eating consumers. Whether for ethical, health, or environmental reasons, vegetarianism/veganism is on the rise.
Trader Joe’s offers many vegetarian and vegan options that appeal to both occasional and full-time vegetarians and vegans, but locating the items in the store requires a full-fledged treasure hunt! In many shopping markets, vegetarian and vegan products have their own sections simplifying shopping and negating the need to constantly read (usually tiny) ingredient labels.
While we appreciate the efforts Trader Joe’s makes to offer unique and vegetarian/vegan friendly products, Trader Joe’s could improve the shopping experience for everyone! We ask that Trader Joe’s continue to expand its vegetarian and vegan products and make them easier to find in your stores. Specifically, we ask that Trader Joe’s implement the following actions:
1. Place vegetarian and vegan items in their own section of each department. Have a vegetarian/vegan section in each of the following areas: fresh, frozen, dairy, alcohol, and shelved products.
2. Your suppliers need to utilize less confusing labels. For example, the Vegan Tikka Masala packaging is nearly identical to the Lamb Vindaloo that is often placed adjacent to the Vegan product. It really sucks when you get home and find you have bought the wrong purple package! Placing vegetarian/vegan products in a separate section would greatly reduce confusion.
3. Ask your suppliers to remove animal ingredients from products whenever possible. For example, there is no need for gelatin in Trader Joe’s Frosted Shredded Bite Size Wheats. Whole Foods makes the same product (Frosted Wheat Squares) without the gelatin!
4. Make vegan products, like Trader Joe’s vegan Marshmallows available year round. Whether for s’mores, hot chocolate, Thanksgiving, these treats are desirable every day of the year
We applaud Trader Joe’s efforts to meet the needs of all its customers. But you can help alleviate frustration and confusion, and appeal to customers by separating vegetarian/vegan products from other products. We ask you to encourage your suppliers to make more products vegetarian and vegan, and keep them coming all year round.
