I'd like to also add a couple of thoughts borrowing/paraphrasing (and adding) from petition signer John Malone whose comment was quite on point.
During an interview, Dalhousie President Florizone spoke of a cultural shift that seemingly has yet to happen. I believe that the signatures on this petition alone prove that our culture has already shifted (even if not in its entirety) and that what needs to follow is swift and critical action by those in the position to do so. In this case, that responsibility falls on Mr. Florizone. It is he, who has the power to now say what will be and what will not be tolerated on campus and therefore in our society.
Florizone also said that whatever action is taken, it will be dependent on the women victims and the route they choose to go. I, personally, see this as an unfair and potentially harmful approach. The victims should not have to bare the responsibility of deciding these students futures. To lay that kind of pressure on the victims is not only unfair but it takes away the opportunity for the University to make its own stance. It more so says 'this was the victims decision' instead of 'Dalhousie has no tolerance of this behaviour and will not condone it'. Do not pass the buck President Florizone, the responsibility is yours.
This of course does not mean that the Universtiy should not be concerned with the victims, it too has the responsibly of providing them with whatever support they may need.
Again, I clarify that these are my personal thoughts and are not necessarily shared by the petition signers.
I will too pass on Mr. Malone's suggestion and encourage all of you to write to Mr. Florizone and let him know that the shift in culture has taken place and none of us find this acceptable. You could copy and paste your petition signature and e-mail it directly to Mr. Florizone.
Per some of the comments here, alumni will no longer donate, students and employees express they no longer feel safe and comfortable, parents worry about their student children, patients of the clinic will put treatment on hold due to concerns, petition signers express worry about retaliation, etc. People are saying loud and clear that this is not disappointing but outrageous and unacceptable. The shift has happened. Action needs to follow.
