Hi! You are one of the over 32 000 + (yes) people who have signed our on-line petition in support of saving Langebaan Lagoon and the town of Langebaan. THANK YOU!
Since Feb 2017, Save Langebaan Lagoon Action Group, a registered NPO, has formally opposed plans by our government and 2 private fishing organisations to develop 884 hectares of floating fish and mussel farms (5 million kilograms of fish), just 1 kilometre off the Club Mykonos and Paradise Beach shoreline.
The R550 000 raised to date has paid for specialist reports from marine biologists, socio-economic experts and legal fees. We sincerely thank all those who have contributed thus far.
In May 2019, we filed an application with the Cape High Court to review the authorisations granted by the Department of Environmental Affairs for this development. The estimated cost of this High Court action is between R1.5 – R2 million ($145 000 / Euro 125 000). In order for our legal counsel to prepare for our court date within the next few months, we URGENTLY need all Supporters to contribute financially to our legal costs. For South African residents, please use our bank details and the deposit reference detailed below. Overseas donors please use our Back- A-Buddy donations platform (follow the link below)
HOW WILL THIS DEVELOPMENT AFFECT OUR LAGOON?
SOCIO-ECONOMICALLY
▪ Rapid decline in property values and demand.
▪ Massive job losses in the hospitality and tourism industry.
▪ Visual pollution - hundreds of floating mussel rafts, long-linesand fish cages, debris on the beaches.
▪ Increase in sharks and seals attracted to rapid fish movement inthe cages.
▪ No-go zones around the fish farms prohibiting water sports andleisure activities.
▪ Beach closure days due to water pollution.
ENVIRONMENTALLY
▪ Collapse of lagoon’s ecosystem.
▪ Toxic effluent flowing into the lagoon (fish food, chemicals, faecal matter from 5 million kilograms of
caged fish)
▪ Decimation of indigenous wild fish stocks.
▪ Sterilisation of the sea bed beneath and around the cages.
▪ Reduction in local and migrating bird colonies – impact onflight paths, food, breeding grounds and habitat.
