Marcus STILL awaits his day in court so that the powers that be can CORRECT the injustice that he received in 2001.
In April of 2020, Marcus received a letter from a branch of the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor's office, The Conviction Integrity Unit. This unit was put in place to review legitimate claims of innocence and other compelling claims that warrant review. At the time, the unit was under the direction of Russell Tye. Mr. Tye personally spoke to someone with interest in the case of Marcus Blalock. In that conversation, Mr. Tye stated that he was seeking special permission from the head Prosecutor, Michael O'Malley to review the case. Thirty days later, Marcus received a letter from Mr. Tye's assistant, Jose Torres, stating that the Conviction Integrity Unit was now reviewing the case because the application that was submitted gives them reason to believe that Marcus was wrongfully convicted. This occurred in May of 2020. A year later, the Conviction Integrity Unit sent an investigator in the field to interview witnesses connected to the case. The investigation was complete by July of 2021. Marcus' attorney, Kimberly K. Corral reached out to the Conviction Integrity Unit several times seeking to view the information gathered from the investigation. Several months went by with no response. She reached out again in December of 2021, and was then told by Mr. Tye that he was resigning from the unit. He then referred her to the new head of the unit, Assistant Prosecutor Mary McGrath...who is the same Prosecutor that was on Marcus' case when he was wrongfully convicted of murder in 2001. This is NO coincidence!!
SOMEONE is trying to cover something up, and it is QUITE evident what's going on. Marcus has been wrongfully incarcerated for 21 YEARS for a crime that he did NOT commit. It's TIME that the CONVICTION INTEGRITY UNIT and the COURTS do the RIGHT thing by correcting this INJUSTICE instead of COVERING UP their mistake! On April 12, 2022, Attorney Kimberly K. Corral sent a letter and supplement to the Conviction Integrity Unit asking for the information that this unit has in their possession that initially gave them reason to believe that Marcus is innocent. To date, she has heard NO WORD from the Conviction Integrity Unit. Recently, she also sent a certified letter to the office of the head Prosecutor, Michael O'Malley seeking relief and the expedited release of Marcus Blalock.
This is an update of what's currently going on with the case of Marcus Blalock. Please share this petition with a friend to support the release of Marcus Blalock.
