Since the 1938 headline “German Jews Pouring Into This Country” the Daily Mail has nurtured hatred and bigotry. Immigrants, refugees, the poor, LGBT community and muslims are some who have been singled out for contempt.
Now three British judges have been branded ‘enemies of the people’ following their legal judgement that our elected parliament should have a say on Brexit. In doing so they were upholding a principle (going back to the Middle Ages) that no one is above the law and that rule by decree is tyranny.
United countries are stronger than those riven by division and sectarianism. Whether the Daily Mail likes it or not, the UK includes migrants, refugees, the LGBT community, muslims and the 48% who voted remain. Waitrose can help by not promoting a paper whose selling point for over seventy years has been fear, division and hatred.
