Dear _____________ (Enter name of MP)
If you do anything this week, please watch the BBC Panorama programme ‘Forgotten Heroes of the Covid front line’ Monday 30th January, BBC 1, 8pm.
I am writing to you to highlight the petition on the Change platform, calling for compensation and pension scheme for Key Workers who caught Covid while working during the pandemic and are now left destitute.
It seems shameful that the governments of the UK continue to ignore their plight, setting the bar for claiming any kind of disability, industrial injury or other benefit so high that many do not qualify. It also is appalling that so many staff trying to seek compensation from their employers find that their Personal Injury Claims are turned down. Many key workers face losing their homes (indeed, many have already), as well as their careers as a result of stepping up for the country during the pandemic. Now that the pandemic is 3 years old, surely it is wrong to continue to ignore this situation?
So many of them infected during the early days of the lockdown could not access Covid testing. Many have found that their infection was not reported as an incident, accident or to RIDDOR. Many of those who can work find they can’t do so full time, also having a negative impact on their income. This is coming at a time when inflation is high and the cost of living crisis, with food and energy prices continuing to rise.
You clapped for the NHS during the lockdown; surely we must not now forget the sacrifice of all key workers during the pandemic who are now having to live with its negative effects?
Yours faithfully,
