Thanks for signing our petition - "Craig Laundy: I am not a thug". We've received an email response from Craig Laundy. The MP has declined our request for a meeting with Tibetan community members and claimed to have been misquoted in the recent media report, Craig Laundy and the China connection. http://www.afr.com/news/politics/national/craig-laundy-and-the-china-connection-20170621-gwvml5 The MP stated that he had issued the media release in response to the concerns expressed by the Chinese-Australian community in his electorate. Just as the MP had listened to the grievances of the Chinese community members in his area, we think he should have also availed himself of the opportunity to hear directly from the Tibetans, their experiences of living under China’s occupation of their homeland, and what drove them to protest at the Chinese consulate in Sydney. And just as he had assured the Chinese community that “the Australian Government takes very seriously its obligations to protect the safety and dignity of foreign diplomatic and consular missions and condemns all forms of violent protest,” we wish he could also assure the Tibetans in Australia that the Australian Government stands up for justice for Tibet. Here is the link to his media release. https://craiglaundy.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/Craig-Laundy-MP-Media-Statement-Demonstration-outside-Chinese-Consulate-General-Sydney-24-July-2015.pdf While our demand for a meeting was not met, we want to let you know that together we’ve sent a clear message that the Tibetan people and supporters of Tibet will always speak up for truth. Thanks. Australia Tibet Council
