These are excerpts from the Domestic Animal Management (Cats and Dogs) Strategy 2014-2020
"Using State trend averages of 20 dogs and 12 cats per 100 people, it is estimated that the actual population of cats and dogs, taking into account those that are not registered, would more closely amount to approximately 53,000 dogs and almost 32,000 cats"
"Population forecasts indicate that by 2021, the estimated population of the Sunshine Coast Local Government Area will be approximately 350,000 people. By 2031, this is estimated to increase to approximately 425,000 people"
"By 2031, it is estimated that there will be a total 85,000 dogs and 50,000 cats within the Sunshine Coast Council region."
Another excerpt is from https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-020-79513-6
"Desexing status was recorded for 52,941 cats born between 2010 and 2017 inclusive of which 83.6% were desexed" I believe the number is actually well below this but will use this as an example.
Going by this 17.4% werent desexed. So 17.4% of 32,000 is 5,568 cats. If assuming half are female 2,784 cats are breeding. 1 cat can have 488 kittens over 5 years so 2,784 cats will produce a staggering 1,358,592 kittens over 5 years. This is a serious concern and more than enough reason to have subsidised desexing.
