In late 2015, Jeff Donnelly was killed while riding his bike at the intersection of Page Mill Road and Highway 280. This is a well known intersection for people biking because it is heavily used and very dangerous. After the fatality, Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition, (SVBC), the County of Santa Clara, Caltrans and neighboring jurisdictions Palo Alto and Los Altos Hills worked together to quickly identify near-term safety solutions. The public agencies, namely the County and Caltrans, brought the relevant stakeholders together to identify interim safety improvements which then led to the expeditious design and funding the project. (For more information, check out the SVBC blog here.)

Unfortunately, three years have passed and the project is still not built.

Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition appreciates the collaboration between the relevant agencies that lead to the quick design and allocation of funding. That said, we are frustrated that a shovel-ready project remains unbuilt three years after the fatality. Please work out whatever issues remain and build the improvements to this intersection that will result in better safety for all users, in particular people biking.

Thank you,

Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition and the Undersigned
