Members of local walking and running clubs have joined calls for Bradford Council to publicly list grouse shooting dates for Ilkley Moor.
Ban Bloodsports on Ilkley Moor (BBIM) has formally written to Bradford Council calling for a policy of not publicising grouse shooting dates to be withdrawn.
In a letter sent to the council's strategic director of regeneration and culture, Mike Cowlam, BBIM legal officer, Tod Bradbury, argues there is a realistic likelihood of moor users inadvertently encountering firearms this grouse shooting season, and requests an urgent change is made to the policy in the public interest.
Members of local walking and running clubs, who regularly use Ilkley Moor, have publicly spoken out in favour of BBIM’s call, stating that coming face-to-face with an armed grouse shooting party would cause them alarm, fear and distress. They are requesting the council publicise the dates in order to give moor users the right to chose whether or not to visit on a shoot day.
