Say, Black Lives Matter

As you know, there is a huge movement addressing the constant examples of police brutality and the overall social injustice to people of color, most notably, Black and African Americans. The Black Lives Matter movement has been going strong in the last few weeks and is only getting stronger by the day. We are at the point where millions of people across the state, across the country, across the globe, are protesting and showing support for Black Lives Matter. Corporations such as Amazon, Ben & Jerry’s, Netflix, just to name a few have publicly shown their support by donating to the cause or at the very least stating that “Black Lives Matter”. Unfortunately, Costco Wholesale has not been one of them. Costco, who proudly states the importance of treating their members with respect and their employees like family, has made no mention of their support for their Black “family members” who are all suffering and grieving during these times Black Lives Matter.

I have worked for Costco for years now. Spent countless nights working overtime, volunteered for physically and/or mentally demanding tasks to help the warehouse because I wanted to do good by a job that does well by me. I’m far from the only employee who goes the extra length and probably done 1/8 of work compared to other devoted employees. However, despite the extra work I have committed to this company, it pains me to say this but Costco has failed me. Costco has failed us. The sole fact that Costco has emailed all Store Managers about the new “Dress Code Policy” which states things along the line that employees are not allowed to wear potentially provoking apparel such as “Black Lives Matter” or “I Can’t Breathe”, but Costco could not release a public statement defending the Black Lives Matter Movement occurring globally? A coworker of mine was wearing a face mask with the words “Black Lives Matter” on it from Friday, Juneteenth until Sunday the 21st and was pulled into the office by two Assistant General Managers and was informed about this new “Dress Code Policy” which ultimately led to my coworker no longer allowed to wear a mask that simply supports Human Rights. However, another coworker was allowed to wear a facemask with the symbol that represented “Blue Lives Matter”, which eludes to supporting and defending policemen, from Saturday, June 20th until Tuesday, June 23rd and the only reason he was told to stop wearing the Blue Lives Matter mask was because another coworker reported it after hearing about the Black Lives Matter facemask issue and saw it to be unfair that one facemask could be worn but the other couldn’t. With all this being said,  Costco has truly failed every person of color they claim they care for with their silence at a time where silence means siding with those who prefer the countless deaths of innocent Black Americans by the hands of racists, neo-nazi, and the very police we are supposed to trust our lives with. This can not be tolerated nor will it be overlooked. This petition is for Costco to unsilence their employees and a true clear message stating what is happening, what’s been happening for decades if not centuries, in this country.  “Awful actions performed by an unjust system against the black and all minority communities”. We want Costco to stand with us and show solidarity to the Black Lives Matter movement. We want Costco to donate at least $1 million dollars to the Bail Project, a donation that is so insignificant to a company that made close to 153 billion dollars in 2019. This is less than a 20 cent donation from someone who makes $30,000 which is the average starting income of a full-time cashier AT Costco! This petition can be by signed Costco employees, Costco members, or even individuals who are concerned about Costco’s absent voice, will be sent to Costco corporate and be printable so any and every general manager at each warehouse, or buildings, anything Costco related knows how their workers feel about Costco’s cowardice.
