Reconsider your decision to cease funding Play Wales

SUPPORT PLAY WALES CAMPAIGN

We established this campaign following the Welsh Government’s decision to stop grant funding Play Wales. For 15 years we have successfully campaigned for children’s play, now we find ourselves in an astonishing position where we have to campaign for Play Wales.

Play Wales – the national charity for children’s play – works to raise awareness of children and young people's need and right to play and to promote good practice at every level of decision making and in every place where children might play.

It is widely recognised that for 15 years Play Wales has supported the Welsh Government in the implementation of its play policy into practice at a local level. After 30 September 2014 Play Wales will not be able to continue this work.

Play Wales’ Board of Trustees has issued all staff members with 12 weeks notice of redundancy and is considering steps to close the organisation.

We know that your support will help us make the case for Welsh Government funding so that we can continue the work of supporting and advocating for children’s play of the last 15 years.

Please sign this petition to show your support and to urge the Welsh Government to reconsider its decision to stop funding Play Wales.

The Decision Makers

Lesley Griffiths, Minister for Communities and Tackling Poverty
Please see attached response - sent on behalf of Lesley Griffiths AM, Minister for Communities and Tackling Poverty Thank you for the notification of your online petition, sent via an automatic email from Change.org on 17 September, regarding the announcement of the Children and Families Delivery Grants (CFDG) in relation to the play element of the grant. The application from Play Wales was assessed on an equal footing to other third sector organisations in line with the principles established in the Code of Practice for Funding the Third Sector. I understand the outcome was a difficult one for Play Wales, but funding decisions for the CFDG have been made following a robust and fair assessment process. Following positive discussions with Play Wales, funding has now been agreed for the next 18 months specific activities, which Play Wales are well placed to undertake in direct support of key Welsh Government priorities around play and tackling poverty. This will include supporting Local Authorities to meet their duties under the Children and Families (Wales) Measure 2010 to assess and secure sufficient play opportunities.
