  • It ended up being the final feature film released to be produced by Blue Sky Studios, before its closure in April 2021.

  • It was also the only feature film produced by Blue Sky Studios that Disney released after being purchased by Disney, due to the Fox acquisition in March 2019.

  • The film is inspired by Lucas Martell's animated short, Pigeon: Impossible (2009).

  • The hotel where Lance first tracks Kimura is a real place, the Blue Bay Hotel and Resort Grand Esmeralda, and it is really located in Playa del Carmen, Mexico.

  • Will Smith and Tom Holland never met during the making of this film. They admitted this during an interview while promoting the film where Smith and Holland meet for the first time while playing an Escape Hotel challenge.

  • This was Will Smith's second animated film after Shark Tale (2004), released fifteen years prior.

  • Agent Sterling has a tattoo of the US. Marine Corps Emblem of the Eagle, Globe, and Anchor on the left side of his chest (above his heart). He also has a high fade haircut, which is a common style in the Marines. Those clearly indicate that Agent Sterling is Marine Veteran.

  • This was released the same year as Spider-Man: Far from Home (2019). Both films are produced by companies owned by The Walt Disney Company (Marvel Studios/Blue Sky), star Tom Holland, have an African-American super-spy ally (Nick Fury/Lance Sterling), have a fight in Venice and shows the Rialto Bridge, have the villain use an army of killer drones, and have Ben Mendelsohn as someone who impersonates the super-spy ally.

  • When the front desk clerk at the resort whacks Lance with a keyboard she says, "Ratas con alas" echoing how Lance referred to pigeons at the start of the film: "rats with wings."

  • The film's original release date was January 18th, 2019, but was then pushed back to April 19th, 2019. It got pushed back again to September 13th, 2019. And it got pushed back once more to Christmas day on December 25th, 2019.

  • The character "Eyes", who has red hair, is voiced by Karen Gillan, who also has red hair, and (unusually) speaks with her native Scottish accent.

  • The majority of the cast have starred in a Marvel or DC comic book movie; Ben Mendelsohn played Talos in Captain Marvel (2019), Karen Gillan played Nebula in Guardians of the galaxy trilogy, Tom Holland played Peter Parker/Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War (2016), Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), Avengers: Endgame (2019), Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021), and Will Smith played Floyd Lawton/Deadshot in Suicide Squad (2016)

  • The heroic duo Walter & Lance may be named for animation titan Walter Lantz, whose best known creation was Woody Woodpecker.

  • The opening credits of this movie are reminiscent of the James Bond franchise. A pop song that is related to the plot of the movie plays while showing the films characters, events in the movie, or related symbolism throughout the opening.

  • When Lance enters the ruin, he looks around and then goes in further. While walking, Lance moves his head like a pigeon.

  • The third Blue Sky Studios film shooting from a human's perspective (which can switch during the scenes of Lance Sterling's pigeon form), after Epic (2013) and The Peanuts Movie (2015). The other films were shot through animal perspectives (and a robot's perspective in the case of Robots (2005)).

  • Tom Holland and Karen Gillan previously co-starred in Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019). Holland was also considered for the Nick Jonas role in Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (2017) which starred Gillan.

  • The second movie of 2019 that featured Tom Holland pitted against a villain with an army of drones, with the other being as Spider-Man: Far from Home (2019).

  • The 7th Blue Sky Studios Films to have humans, after Ice Age (2002), Rio (2011), Epic (2013), Rio 2 (2014), The Peanuts Movie (2015), and Ferdinand (2017). The others were all humanless.

  • Walter Beckett goes to Venice, Italy in the movie. In Spider-Man: Far from Home (2019), Peter Parker also visits Venice, Italy. Both characters are played by Tom Holland using an American Accent.

  • Last Blue Sky Studios film of the 2010s, and the final film released by Blue Sky Studios overall after its shutdown in April 2021.

  • John Leguizamo was the first choice for the role of Lance Sterling and Josh Hutcherson was the first choice for the role of Walter Beckett.

  • "Flying solo", "sitting ducks", etc. This movie is filled with puns related to birds (which might slip like water off a duck's back if you are not paying attention...)

  • Rashida Jones' fourth animated film, after Inside Out (2015), Dr. Seuss' the Grinch (2018), and Klaus (2019), the prior of which also released in 2019.

  • The only Blue Sky Studios film to be released on Christmas.

  • Steve Oedekerk was considered for the director of this film.

  • Even though Peter Chernin is credited as producer and not his Chernin Entertainment prodco, this is CE's first animated film.

  • Both Will Smith and Karen Gillan share a movie connection: Robin Williams. Smith, who voices Lance Sterling, played the Genie in the live-action remake of Aladdin (2019), the same role that Williams played in the original animated Aladdin (1992), whilst Gillan, who voices Eyes, played Ruby Roundhouse in Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (2017)/Jumanji: The Next Level (2019), sequels to the Williams vehicle Jumanji (1995).

  • Part of a Will Smith and DJ Khaled trifecta. They both act in Bad Boys For Life, they both voice characters in Spies In Disguise and both perform on the Aladdin soundtrack, namely on Friend Like Me. In each instance they share either a scene or a song.

  • Lance's car seats read "e-tron" which is an electric SUV by Audi. Spies in disguise is co-produced by 20th Century Fox animation while the movie Tron (1982) was distributed by 20th Century Fox in Argentina.

In this case, Theodore Shapiro will be the composer for this movie.
