The Issue

Hi my name is West Suhanic. I am a parent with children in the Toronto District School Board. I am concerned with the mathematics education they are receiving. My concerns are backed up by the PISA math test scores which have been declining for Ontario since 2003. Similarly an EQAO study performed over the period 2006 to 2012 shows that math scores for Ontario students are dropping between grade 3 and grade 6. For more information please see the links below.

In order to address this problem, I believe the TDSB should be using the JUMP Math program. The JUMP Math program has been successfuly used in Ontario, British Columbia and England. For more information on JUMP Math please see the research results found at www.jumpmath.org/jump/en/research_reports.

On a personal note one of my children had real difficulty with math, but after taking JUMP math his comprehension and capabilities soared. For example, in Grade 8 when adding three digit numbers he still had trouble adding the numbers in the ONES column. Six months later after being taught JUMP math he was doing three digit addition and subtraction in his head.
