The Issue

As a local resident and an avid skateboarder and BMX rider for over three decades, I, like many community members, earnestly call for the construction of a skatepark on city-owned public land. Our community needs a space where our youth can engage in outdoor activities, cultivate their skills in skateboarding, BMX and more and spend their time constructively.

It's widely understood that skateparks don't only serve as venues for sport but also as platforms for community engagement, which subsequently helps reduce crime rates. According to a survey done in Florida, communities with skateparks saw a reduction in youth-related crimes by almost 40% (Florida-Department-of-Juvenile-Justice, 2015). Furthermore, skateparks are a cost-effective solution, costing far less than other recreational facilities (The Skatepark Project).

Having a local skatepark offers youths a secure place where they can practice their passions, stay active, and build positive relationships. It also prevents skateboarding in less appropriate places, thus reducing potential conflicts and damage to private properties.

Therefore, we request the city officials to allocate public land and necessary resources for an inclusive, community skatepark. Through this skatepark, not only can we provide a secure and enjoyable environment for our youth, but we can also enhance community engagement and decrease crime rates further. Join me in our quest to provide a positive outlet for our community — sign this petition today.
