13 feb 2016 — Gracias a todos los que firmaron esta petición. Casi llegamos a las 800 firmas... es increíble! Nos alegra mucho saber que hay personas que se preocupan por el bienestar de los animales.

Se atraparon a 3 de los gatos. Dos están para adopción en Petco de Ponce y otro en un foster home en lo que lo preparan. Se había atrapado un cuarto gato, pero una persona nos abrió el kennel y lo dejo ir de maldad... que atrevimiento.

Quedan 4 gatos en la colonia de Portal de Sofía a los cuales les seguiremos dando comida digan lo que digan!!!!!!!

9 feb 2016 — Atrapamos a Shadow (negro) y a Gabriel (blanco/negro peludo). Están de camino al albergue de Guaynabo para en varios días salir hacia Petco de Ponce. Todavía estamos tratando de atrapar a Alejandro (anaranjado peludo) para llevarlo luego. Todavía quedan los otros por las áreas, pero son desconfiados y nos huyen.

Es triste que esta ha sido nuestra única opción. Administración dijo que no se podía hacer nada dado a la querella que hizo un residente. Increíble que por la negligencia de algunas personas con sus hijos unos animales inocentes hayan tenido que pagar. Si usted molesta a un animal, el animal se va a defender.

Estos gatos eran un control de plagas natural (ratas, ratones, etc) y mantenían otros gatos callejeros fuera de las áreas.

Queremos agradecer a todos los que han apoyado esta causa. Gracias desde lo más profundo de nuestros corazones. A los animales hay que respetarlos. Tenemos que dejar esa mala costumbre de que porque algo nos molesta o no nos gusta la primera opción es eliminarlo en vez de aprender a coexistir!

We trapped Shadow (black) and Gabriel (black and white long haired). They are on their way to the Humane Society of Guaynabo where they'll stay a few days before heading to Petco in Ponce. We are trying to trap Alejandro (orange long haired tabby) to take him later. The others are still around, but they run away when we try to trap them.

We are sad that this is all what we could do. The administration told us there was nothing that could be done since there was a complaint filed to the police by a resident. It's incredible that for the negligence of some people with their children innocent animals have to pay the price. If you bother an animal, the animal will defend itself.

These cats where a natural pest control for condominium and they kept other stray cats away.

We want to thank everyone who has supported this cause. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. People need to learn to respect animals. Just because something bothers you or you don't like it doesn't mean you have to eliminate it, we need to learn to COEXIST!

Callejeritos de Portal de Sofía

El Condominio Portal de Sofía se caracteriza por ser una comunidad compuesta de muchas personas que son amantes de los animales. Nuestra comunidad, con el apoyo de la administración, llevó a cabo un programa de TNR (Trap, Neuter & Return). Esto consistía en "poner al día" a nuestros gatitos callejeros los cuales nos mantienen libres de plagas y sabandijas indeseadas. 

¿Cómo?
-Esterilizándolos para controlar la sobrepoblación y para que no ocurran peleas que amenacen con la salud de nuestros gatos. Durante las peleas, ademas de daño físico, es cuando mayormente a través de las mordidas, se transmiten la leucemia (FelV) y el SIDA felino (FIV). También entendemos que estas peleas pueden molestar a los residentes y esto ayuda a reducirlas. Esterilizarlos también ayuda a que los gatos machos no "marquen" territorio con orina.  

-Vacunándolos, las vacunas son el paso clave para mantener a la población gatuna y humana saludable. La prevención es más efectiva que tratar la enfermedad.

-Cuidado básico veterinario: realizar un chequeo básico incluye hacer la prueba para FIV/FelV (SIDA felino/leucemia) y tratar a los gatos cuando tengan infecciones o alguna lesión.

Los "callejeritos" actualmente son una colonia de 7 gatos que gracias al esfuerzo comunitario, 5 de ellos han sido completamente vacunados y esterilizados. 

Tristemente hoy jueves 4 de febrero recibimos una circular de parte de la administración en la cual se pide que se desista de la práctica de alimentar a nuestros callejeritos, dado a un incidente en que un gato mordió a un niño; aunque se desconoce si el gato era parte de la colonia de callejeritos o un gato de afuera que entró. También se nos informó que se hicieron gestiones con Control de Animales en Diciembre 4 para tratar de remover estos gatos.

Entendemos que esto es injusto. Los gatos "feral" (el término en inglés) o "callejeros" al igual que los perros deben ser tratados con más cuidado. No deben perseguirse, acorralarse, ni asustarse dado a que ellos no están acostumbrados al contacto humano como lo estaría un animal de la casa.

Remover estos gatos tampoco sería la solución al problema. Los gatos mantienen la comunidad libre de plagas y sabandijas indeseadas. Los gatos “feral”/“stray”/“callejeros" viven en una localización específica porque les ofrece comida y refugio. Si la colonia es removida, gatos de colonias aledañas y gatos realengos pueden aprovechar la oportunidad para mudarse al área que ahora estaría disponible. El ciclo empezaría de nuevo con más gatos sin esterilizar y vacunar peliando por territorio. Además los refugios de animales no aceptan gatos "feral" ya que consideran que son más difíciles para adoptar. Estos gatos que han estado viviendo tranquilos en nuestras áreas serían sacrificados (a través de eutanasia) una vez Control de Animales se los llevase.

Pedimos la cooperación de la administración y de los residentes para buscar una solución a esta situación que no conlleve un triste final para la vida de estos animalitos. Nosotros queremos luchar por ellos y seguir con nuestro programa TRN.

The Condominium Portal de Sofia characterizes itself for being a community composed of many animal lovers. Our community, with support from the administration, conducted a program of TNR ( Trap, Neuter & Release) . This was to keep our stray kittens healthy and safe which also helps keep us free from unwanted pests and vermin!

How?

-Neutering them to control overpopulation and reduce fights for territory that can put at risk their health. During fights cats not only receive phyiscal injuries but this is when, through bites, leukemia (FeLV) and feline hiv (FIV) are transmitted. Neutering also helps control bothersome behavior like marking.
-Vaccinating them to keep both human and cat population healthy and safe. Prevention is better than sickness.
-Veterinary checkups to make sure they don’t have any diseases or injuries.

 Our “callejeritos” colony currently consists of 7 cats that thanks to community efforts 5 are fully vaccinated and neutered.

Sadly on Thursday February 4th we received a letter from administration asking people desist from feeding the feral cat colony due to an incident in which a kid was bitten by a cat, even thought it is unknown if the cat belong to the “callejeritos” colony or it was a cat that came from outside. We also where informed that since December 4th 2015 there's a complaint filed with Animal Control to remove the cats.

We think this is very unfair. Feral/stray cats, as well as dogs, should be treated with gently and with carefulness. They should not be harassed, cornered or scared on purposed since they are not used to human contact like house pet is.

Removing these cats would NOT be a solution. Not only to they keep use free of pests, feral cats stay in an area because they feel safe since they have food and shelter. By removing them nearby stray cats may take over and the cycle would start once again with more cats, but this time not vaccinated or neutered! Also, shelters do not accept feral cats since most consider them unadoptable. If Animal Control removes them these cats that have been living peacefully in our areas will be euthanized.

We ask for the cooperation of the residents and administration of Portal de Sofía so we can reach an amicable solution for this situation and not a sad end for the lives of these cats. We want to fight for them and to continue our TRN program.
