The federal Violence Against Women Act is up for reauthorization, and Rep. Jackson Lee of Texas has just introduced a bill in the House of Representatives.

Surprise, surprise, the bill seeks to promote "victim-centered" and "trauma-informed" investigations. Section 206 is titled, "Demonstration program on trauma-informed training for law enforcement."

And Section 303 wants to:

  • "train campus personnel in how to use a victim-centered, trauma-informed interview technique, which means asking questions of a student or a campus employee who is reported to be a victim of sexual harassment, sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence, or stalking, in a manner that is focused on the experience of the reported victim"

Nothing is said about focusing on the experience of the defendant, or even focusing on the objective facts of the case.

We encourage you to tell your Representative to OPPOSE the Violence Against Women Act bill HR 1620. Call: (202) 224-3121.

A vote is expected to be held this coming week, so please call now!
