Our two previous Updates highlighted prosecutor Alison Saunders' "Believe the Victim" policy in England, and its tragic effects on the wrongfully accused.
There have been other victims of the misguided "Believe the Victim" policy: Actual rape victims. Here's why....
As a result of the Saunders' "Believe the Victim" mandate, detectives began to focus on finding evidence to support the complainants' allegation, and didn't vigorously pursue leads that might disprove the complaint.
Word soon got out that rape complaints would not be scrutinized. False allegations increased to the point that the falsely accused needed to set up their own Facebook support group: Accused.me.uk
On Monday, police made an announcement that rape complainants would need to turn over their mobile phone, laptop, tablet, or smart watches to examine the accuser's text messages and emails. This new policy will certainly discourage persons' willingness to report crimes, even for true rape victims -- see attached NY Times article.
Believe the Victim has been a disaster in England for the falsely accused and for real victims. Who in their right mind would want to bring these ideas to the United States?
