The problem of corrupt police officers and detectives is again in the news, this time following release of the annual report from the National Registry of Exonerations: https://www.law.umich.edu/special/exoneration/Documents/Exonerations%20in%202018.pdf

In 2018 there were 151 exonerations across the nation, many involving misconduct by prosecutors or police officers. According to the report, "the most common misconduct documented in the cases in the Registry involves police or prosecutors (or both) concealing exculpatory evidence."

Especially notable was the Sergeant Watts Scandal in Chicago. Thirty-one defendants who had been framed by police on drug and weapons charges were exonerated in the wake of a scandal involving corrupt police officers led by Sergeant Ronald Watts.

SBB philosophy tells detectives to "Start By Believing," to seek to "corroborate the victim's account," and to use the "language of non-consensual sex." SBB also instructs investigators to anticipate the legal strategies by defense attorneys.

It's only a matter of time until we begin to see news reports of the Start By Believing Scandal.
