Monday's Update highlighted the hysteria surrounding the "Satanic Day Care" cases of the 1980s in which day care providers and parents were accused of bizarre acts of child sexual abuse. The frenzy was driven by the mantra, "Believe the Children."
Today, we'd like to introduce you to two of the victims of this hysteria: Dan and Fran Keller, former owners of a day care center in Oak Hill, Texas. They were charged with the sexual assault of a three-year-old girl, and each sentenced to 48 years in prison.
It later became apparent their convictions were a travesty of justice. On June 20, 2017 they were exonerated. Afterwards they were awarded $3.4 million for their wrongful convictions - see article.
Like "Believe the Children," "Start By Believing" investigations begin with an "initial presumption" of guilt, and seek out confirmatory evidence in order to "corroborate the victim's account."
Isn't it time that we learn from the lessons of history?
