Persons who report an assault should be treated with courtesy and respect. And it's appropriate for counselors and mental health professionals to use Start By Believing concepts and methods.

But investigators are not mental health professionals. Their job is to uncover the truth of the allegation in an impartial and honest manner. That means asking probing questions of the complainant, the suspect, and other witnesses.
