Lefty a beautiful special-needs Beagle broke through his fenced yard from his home in Florida during a storm. His owner Kristy Durham and her husband acted quickly by contacting 3 shelters, and posting on FB. He was sight and hearing impaired. Lefty was picked up by the Polk animal control department  shortly after his escape from the family's yard. and euthanized within a couple of hours. The family was devastated! Because Lefty's microchip was out of date, and had obvious health issues, Lefty never stood a chance of having his family find him. The shelter never gave the family the opportunity to try to locate their beloved pet. This is so unacceptable! It should be mandatory that every KILL shelter in all 50 states, regardless of microchip, or health issues (unless the animal is suffering), has a mandatory waiting period of seven days for the owner to claim their pet. Then a mandatory five day period to allow for adoption. There are many people that will rescue special needs animals. The fact that we have kill shelters at all is bad enough. To euthanize an animal within hours after being picked up, is deplorable! Please help by signing this petition and getting justice for Lefty, and call it "Lefty's Law". We need to petition this to congress, so that Lefty didn't die in vain, and to make sure every owner has the opportunity to locate their missing pet. Please keep your pets microchip up to date. But let's get congress to make sure this type of tragedy NEVER happens again.
