- President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka
His Execellency Mahinda Rapaksha
We are shocked to see the brutal military action to disband the peaceful protest of the thousands of villagers against the Venigross Gloves Factory located in Nadungamuva near Weliweriya, Sri Lanka. We condemn the killing of 3 people including 2 school children and injuring many others on the 1st August 2013 during this action.
We believe that men, women and children in the villages in the vicinity have a legitimate right to oppose to the polluting factory. They also have a right to demand clean water, which is a basic need and a human right.
The company has dumped toxic sludge in the vicinity until recent. We believe that the failure of the Central Environmental Authority (CEA) to act in time is instrumental to the loss of a valuable life and injuring many others.
We therefore request your Excellency,
# To immediately investigate this matter and take actions against those who are responsible for the death of an innocent protestors and give justice,
# to take immediate steps to resolve this major social and environmental disaster,
# ensure right to water for the people in the area and
# direct the responsible agencies to cleanup the contaminated ground water table.
