Thank you for considering the perspective of teenagers! We did it! We made our voices loud and clear! However, we must keep up this energy to fight for what is right especially in the wake of the shootings in Atlanta. We must not settle for excuses, minimizations or pretty words with no actions or visibility. We must dismantle racism where it starts. Implicit bias seeded through jokes, pejoratives, stereotypes and other forms of hate speech set the foundation for violent racism. What happened in Atlanta was appalling yet not surprising. Anti-Asian racism existed for decades and centuries. We must educate ourselves and everyone on the history of Asian people in America beyond the first and second generation. This includes the stories of Asian slaves in the 18th and 19th century American South and the Asian soldiers who fought in the Civil War. Anti-Asian racism is not new or exclusive to the 21st century. Finally, we have to continue putting pressure on the media, advertisers and our local government representatives to make meaningful changes whether it is through authentic representation to protective legislation. Lack of representation and visibility is a form of censorship and suppression. Let's change that!
